You might have been hearing a little bit about this new plugin for Maya, V-Ray Next. It's a free upgrade for anybody who owns the previous V-Ray plugin and it adds some pretty cool features to your rendering toolbox. I spoke with the folks over at Chaos Group about this new product and when they gave me the green light to post this, I was really excited to get it out to you all. What's so great about V-Ray Next? Well it's got many new features for your everyday rendering workflow, their main focus was on improving their existing features and fixing some of the bugs that were reported by users. But what is so special about this plugin? Well, it will allow anyone without any additional plugins or renderers to easily get access to V-Ray's global illumination, ambient occlusion and depth map shadows. It has an improved denoiser, which has become a big issue in rendering efficiency over time. It also brings some really cool new technologies to the table. Like Animation Sequences, Animation Draw Calls, RAM Previews, Terrain textures ;) Now, if you're a V-Ray user I'm sure you will be excited about this new release. If you're not familiar with V-Ray just know that it's a highly optimized renderer for the Maya platform so it's incredibly fast and efficient. It provides for some truly stunning renders. It can simulate global illumination but it can also render using radiosity as well so it's got the right tool for the job wherever you want to use it.
